Spring Break is coming up! With Spring Break comes exciting travels and adventures, but it also brings the potential for danger. Still, as long as you follow common sense safety measures, you should be fine. Here are some ways to have fun and stay safe while you’re on Spring Break.

Go with friends

Of course, the most common safety measure is to travel in groups. This is great because it’s a good excuse to take your friends with you on your trip; you can help keep each other safe. It’s also a good idea to make sure at least one of your friends is sober at any given time, just to make sure no one does something they will regret later. However, just because you’re traveling in a pack doesn’t mean you should let your guard down when it comes to other safety measures; follow other common safety measures, too. Bringing your friends on your Spring Break trip will make your trip not only more fun, but safer as well.

Be safe at your hotel

Even if your hotel is the best, safest place in the city you are at, you should still take some measures to keep yourself safe at the hotel. Here are some things you can do to make sure you’re safe where you’re at:

  • Don’t say your room number out loud. No one needs to know where you’re staying, so don’t freely give them that information. Similarly, don’t keep your room key in a conspicuous place or advertise it. Keep your room number and key confidential.
  • When you leave the room, make sure your door is closed tightly. Not all hotel doors close by themselves, and it’s very easy to accidentally leave a door open when you’re eager to get out and see the city (I speak from personal experience! This actually happened to me once). Before you leave, take a second to make sure your hotel room door is closed.
  • Take advantage of the hotel safe. If you’re leaving the room, keep valuable things like your laptop and your important documents locked up inside the safe. This will make sure they don’t get stolen, and you’ll know where to find them.

A big part of staying safe on Spring Break is staying safe at your hotel. Your hotel may be extremely safe, but it still a good idea to take these measures.

Take care of your body

When you’re having the time of your life during Spring Break, it’s hard to remember that you still need to practice self-care. Especially while you’re out adventuring, it’s important to listen to your body and give it what it needs. If you don’t, your vacation could be ruined by a visit to the emergency room. Some easy ways to take care of yourself while you are out on spring break are:

  • Stay hydrated. You can dehydrate very quickly after a few hours of exploring a new city. Don’t let yourself get to the level of heat exhaustion! Carrying a water bottle around drinking from it every once in a while will prevent heat exhaustion.
  • Apply sunscreen. It’s all too easy to forget to apply sunscreen, but this is a bad mistake! Your skin will thank you if you take a few minutes to apply sunscreen. I am from Florida, so I can tell you that skipping sunscreen even once can give you a nasty sunburn (not to mention, repeat offenses can make you prone to skin cancer!).

Be careful with what you wear

Sometimes, what you wear can give you away as a tourist and can make you a target for pickpockets. So please, be careful to not stand out too much. For example, don’t wear expensive jewelry or clothes. This will give the impression that you’re rich and will attract pickpockets. Plus, it’s easy to lose any jewelry you take on a trip, it’s not worth the risk of losing an expensive piece of jewelry.

Be aware of scam artists

Scam artists in foreign countries love to take advantage of unsuspecting tourists traveling over the Spring Break week. Don’t let yourself become one of their targets! Be aware of these scam artists’ tactics. Once you know their tricks, it will be easier for you to recognize a scam and to avoid it. It doesn’t take an awful lot of research to educate yourself on these scams. Doing a simple Google search will bring up many helpful results. You could also look at common scams and common tips listed on Wikitravel and Lonely Planet. Do your research ahead of time and you will be prepared to avoid these common scams.

Unfortunately, Spring Break trips have the potential to be dangerous. But with a little common sense and prior research, you can have fun and be safe on your amazing Spring Break journey.
